Urban River Distribution

An alternative mode to road transport for urban distribution:

  • Create a river service between the logistics platforms and city ports,
  • Choose another mode of delivery to serve the heart of the city (ex. barge and green vehicles for the last kilometers),
  • Anticipate the growing constraints related to urban distribution (road congestion...),
  • Reduce the carbon footprint.

A successful logistics operation of urban river distribution:

Laurent KAMIEL, Franprix Product Flow Manager

The choice of FRANPRIX to make foodstuff products travel up to the centre of Paris via the river Seine aims at providing its customers and more extensively the Parisian people with a real environmental benefit. Relying upon an optimum loading of a daily barge with 48 containers, this project will avoid 450,000 kilometers of transport by road per year, that is to say 14,000 hours of presence of trucks on the Paris area network. As for our enterprise, this will mean 88,500 liters of fuel oils saved each year, a 37 % drop in our carbon dioxide emissions and a reduction of the accidents at work related to cargo transport. In other respects, this “road + river” solution will also reduce indirect costs for the company (bottlenecks, accidents, pollution) by around one million euro per year. In addition to the ‘green’ aspects, resorting to river transport makes it possible to secure the morning deliveries to our Paris stores while getting rid of the traffic constraints when approaching the capital city.”
